Your emergency checklist for water damage:

  • As quickly as possible, eliminate the source of the water!

  • To minimize damage, discourage employees from walking on wet carpet any more than necessary.

  • If safe to do so, turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas and remove any small electrical devices from those areas.

  • Remove small furnishings from carpet, or place aluminum foil under legs, to help prevent rust or furniture stains which may become permanent.

  • Hang draperies and pin up furniture skirts to avoid contact with wet floors, which helps to prevent watermarks.

  • Remove breakables, moisture-sensitive and high-value items, books, paper goods, waste bins, potted plants, and any other items that may stain floor coverings. (Remember to check under desks for small items and in lobbies, lounges, or waiting areas.)

  • Plan for restoration crews to move furniture into unaffected dry areas.

  • Make sure your employees practice good personal hygiene after handling affected items.

  • To avoid the chance of electrical shock, do not use vacuums or shop vacs to remove the water.

  • If sewage related, prevent handling of any contaminated items and do not turn on fans, heating, or air conditioning units as it may spread the contamination.

It is not recommended to handle water damages in-house. Non-commercial grade drying equipment (like shop vacs) will probably not extract water from both the carpet and the padding. Over a short period of time, this will lead to secondary damages, which are more costly to remediate.

Review your company's policy with your agent to determine if you have proper coverage for the damage. It would be a good idea to review coverage ahead of time to make sure your business is covered for all situations, such as fire suppression systems, which require an inexpensive insurance rider.

The customer always has the full authority to use whichever restoration company they feel is qualified. It doesn't cost the insured any more or less to call their own company in. The important factor is to make sure the damage is handled correctly the first time.

The importance of having Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) cannot be understated—it assures you of trained, experienced technicians on every job. IICRC-certified firms should not use non-certified employees to handle your restoration job at the risk of improperly mitigating the damages.

In addition to being certified by the industry's most widely recognized and accepted certification program, all our technicians attend IICRC-accredited continuing education and training programs several times a year. We invest a significant amount of time and money in training and equipment to ensure we perform the highest standards of work.
