The furniture in your home is a big investment. Not only do you use it daily for a variety of reasons, but also you probably paid a handsome amount for the quality of furniture you received. It needs the proper care to look good and also last a long enough time to make the investment worth it. That is why you need to regularly clean your upholstery. Now, you may be thinking, “I already paid a bunch for this furniture set, now I have to pay professionals to clean it too?” Thankfully (for you and your wallet) this is something you can do yourself and we are going to give you 5 easy tips on how to properly clean your upholstery yourself.
Pay Attention to the Codes
Every piece of furniture comes with a code. These codes offer guidelines on how to properly clean your upholstery and which cleaning methods are applicable. Here are the codes and what they mean.
W - Upholstery can be cleaned with a water-based solution
S - Cleaning solution needs to be water-free (e.g. dry cleaning solvent)
X - Best left to cleaning professionals, like KleenRite
It is crucial that this is the first step when you are beginning the process of cleaning your upholstery. You want to make sure you are using the proper method and technique so you can get the upholstery as clean and fresh as possible.
Vacuuming your upholstery is a quick and easy way to clean it. Oftentimes, dust, dirt, allergens, bacteria and microbes accumulate anywhere people or animals sit and spend time. By running a vacuum over your upholstery, you are removing all of those hidden, unwanted items and freshening up your furniture. It’s quick, doesn’t take too much work, and allows you to easily reach all the folds, crevices and tight spots in a couch or chair.
Don’t Let Spills Sit Around
How often have you heard that certain spills doom your upholstery as soon as they happen? Many people have a notion that coffee, juice, or wine can immediately ruin your upholstery once it is spilled; however, we are here to tell you that is not necessarily true. The key here is to act fast. Once a spill has occurred, quickly blot it with a white towel or rag until the area of the stain is completely saturated. Make sure not to attempt to rub or scrub the stain clean, as that will just expand the area. Just continue applying the white towel or rag and the stain should soon come out. For heavier spots wet the spot with our Spot Out & using white towel or rag only blot until it’s lighter or gone. Repeat as needed.
When Your Pet is Behind the Spill or Stain
Our Pet Spotter is the perfect choice when it comes to those little pet spots that happen. Our Pet Spotter is safe on fabric and won’t harm your pets. This product will help on vomit spots, urine and feces spots. Here’s a couple of tricks to help remove those unwanted spots:
Wet the spot with our Pet Spot Out & using a WHITE cloth towel only blot until it’s lighter or gone. Repeat as needed.
For heavier spots you can soak the spot with our Pet Spot Out, put a white cloth towel over the spot, place something heavy on the towel and let dry. The purpose of this is to let the spot dry over time and instead of the discoloration staying in the top of the carpet fibers the discoloration should soak into the towel and not stay in the carpet.
Depending on how concentrated the spots are professional cleaning may be needed.
