It’s that time of the year. Fall has arrived, the leaves are changing and the air has a new crispness to it. It also means Halloween is right around the corner and if you have kids, we are sure you are well aware of this. Halloween is a great time to let the kids have fun, get fresh air and bring home their weight in candy. Now, the hope is all that candy gets eaten (at a reasonable pace of course); however, things do not always go according to plan and, more often than not, the candy ends up in the carpet instead of the kids’ (or your) stomach. So what do you do when that happens? We’re here to tell a few different techniques you can use to get two of the more common candy types out of your carpet.
Hard Candies such as Jolly Ranchers and suckers can be difficult to get out of a carpet. When the candy dries on the carpet, the sticky outer layer bonds itself with the carpet fibers. Even when the candy is removed, there is still a stain left over that needs to be removed. The first step to take is pouring some water over the candy to dissolve the sugars that are binding the candy to the carpet. Make sure to use cold water as warm water can make the stain set into the carpet. This will make it much easier to remove. After removing it, you will want to use our Spot Out and then blot it with a clean white cloth to remove the stain. You may have to repeat this step to finally remove the stain, but once the stain is gone, all you have to do is allow the area to dry and the stain has officially been removed.
Chocolate can leave behind the biggest mess as it can melt into the carpet or be pressed deep by unaware foot traffic. The best way to get chocolate out of the carpet is to act quickly. As with any stain, the issue becomes harder to remove the longer it sets. You’ll want to use a paper towel or knife to remove the excess chocolate that has not sunk into the carpet fibers. After you’ve done this, you can move on to using our Spot Out to get the rest of the stain up.
For these types of heavier spots, you can soak the spot with our Spot Out, put a white cloth towel over the spot, place something heavy on the towel and let dry. The purpose of this is to let the spot dry over time and instead of the discoloration staying in the top of the carpet fibers the discoloration should soak into the towel and not stay in the carpet.
One tip we want to share is to never use a colored towel when treating spots. If you do, you run the risk of the towel transferring its color onto the carpet causing bigger issues.
Halloween is an exciting time for you and your family. It’s a chance to let the kids go out, have a good time with family and friends and be rewarded with enough candy to last them the next month. Don’t let the danger of stains detract from the fun. Enjoy the moment and just know that, if candy does happen to get into the carpet, we have the proper steps to make sure to make that process as painless for you as possible. Enjoy the holiday!
